Functional Braces
WHAT ARE FUNCTIONAL BRACES?
Functional braces are used to help children with small lower jaws. There are certain bites when they are not suitable.
How do functional braces work?
They work by holding the lower jaw in a forward position which:
- encourages the lower jaw to grow forward
- reduces the projection of the upper teeth ahead of the lower teeth
We have 3 types at Lakeside
- Twin blocks
- Powerscope
- Invisalign Mandibular Advancement (Private only) from 8 years of age
(Twin blocks and Powerscope generally start from 12 years of age)
Invisalign Mandibular advancement
Invisalign has created a brace that allows us to straighten the teeth at an early age at the same time as helping a small lower to achieve a more normal position (reducing the projection of upper teeth.
Ideal if you want your child treating before NHS treatment can start
Twin Blocks
These are the commonest type of functional brace in the UK.
These removable braces feature pink blocks clipped onto the teeth with metal clasps.
Your child has to be committed as they need to be worn all day and night for a minimum of 3 months then at night for a minimum of 3 months.
Powerscope
This is a fixed functional so cannot be removed by the childre. This has the advantage of great cooperation, but it does take a little time to get used to
Initially we straighten the teeth completely with fixed braces, then we add the Powerscope pistons that hold the lower jaw in a forward position.
This brace is only suitable if we have time to straighten the teeth ahead of completion of growth of the lower jaw.
